Review of The Devils (1971) by Janne E — 27 Sep 2007
Oliver Reed's bishop gets sucked into power struggle between cardinal Richelieu and the King of France due to his liberal views and the unfortunate hallucinations of a nun in love with him, who is instead considered to be satanically possessed (or something like that, it's been 4 years since I saw this).
Director Russell's shock tactics aren't too exploitative even though much detail goes into presenting the audience with medieval torture mechanisms and orgy visions. Additionally, the depressing ending might be too over the top but gives a feeling that this film is something quite extraordinary.
