Review of The Devils (1971) by Rosario G — 16 Jan 2008
Ken Russell's "The Devils" is much more than just a controversial film. It has been banned in almost every country. It had to be cut to receive an X-Rating (equivalent to today's NC-17 rating) in the US.
Those involved with the film were threatened with a 3-year prison sentence if they were to ever set foot in Italy, and the 122-minute uncut version is yet to surface. Currently the only way to view this film is by a bootleg quality DVD, and this with over 15 minutes of the final product cut out.
This is very unfortunate since The Devils is a fascinating and historically significant work of art that all those serious about film should see. It is a thought-provoking, visually astounding, expertly-crafted masterpiece.
Yes, it is shocking, and only the most open-minded should approach it. But those willing will be rewarded with a unique and unforgettable experience.
