Review of The Devils (1971) by Paul D — 01 May 2008
A cavalcade of chaos and corruption, at the hub of which throbs a handsome, vigorous Oliver Reed, peaking at the very height of his career as a scoundrel made scapegoat. Constructed about him are Russell's sterile and occasionally terrifying sets, within which he plays out the most demented drama of divine debauchery.
Never in the field of human convents have so many naked nuns caused so much trouble so quickly. The country is sick, the church is sick, the people are sick and if you had anything rich for dinner then you can expect to be quite unwell too.
In 1971, Russell must surely have broken some kind of record for motion picture enemas.
