Review of The Devils (1971) by Senor C — 08 Apr 2011
I think people rave about this movie a bit too much. It may be Ken Russell's masterpiece but on a cinema whole it isn't what I would call a masterpiece. Russell is @ his most excessive as even I found myself offended.
Im not Catholic but you can't have a nun give a crucifixion of Christ an moustache ride...well I guess you can because it's in here. The Devils is insane & very brave. For that it should be commended but Russell's sensationalism sometimes leaves a bad taste in my mouth & Im pretty jaded.
Great performances by Oliver Reed (maybe one of his best) & Vanessa Redgrave as a lusty humpbacked nun. Certainly not for all tastes but those brave enough to tread these sacrilegious waters give it a shot; you just might like.
..or even love which seems to be the case by many people.
