Review of The Devil Wears Prada (2006) by Sabra E — 25 Mar 2011
Aside from Meryl Streep's ultra spectacular performance, Emily Blunt's charming touch and the lovely Stanley Tucci bringing the never-ending punchbowl to every party, the Devil wears Prada is one of the most annoying movies I've ever watched.
Anne Hathaway's character was grating. She reminded me of many girls who are too sensitive to take criticism and think the world should bend around their own sensibilities. And also of the spoiled entitled girl type babied by her parents expecting the world to bow down to the fact that she was the president of the journalism club in Michigan somewhere.
Wide-eyed naivete is one thing, but acting offended every time someone tells you something you don't want to hear is only cute in sushi circles where girls out-bitchy each other by having contests to see who's the most unsatisfied while calling themselves foie gras foodies or some shit like that.
I realize a lot of this character development could've been formed in the screenplay, or in the acclaimed book from which it was taken. But this does not change Hathaway's clownish expressions throughout. Or her over-fumbly "duh, like what?" act, which was old from the start.
Her character could've, but did not represent "girl power" or an fashion industry anti-elitism. She did not pull off being a Cinderella or Annie Hall of the journalism world. If anything she reminded me of the way weak people get by with sympathy for always looking injured, even by the smallest thing.
People like her should not be passed off as role model protagonists, otherwise women will get the strange idea that passive people do not get stepped on every minute by more aggressive people if they become offended and refuse to assimilate to a fast paced environment where aesthetics and compliance play a huge role in promotions and top positions.
The world is cut throat, especially New York's fashion journalism circuit. To think that to be absurd is just liberalism and wannabe princess propaganda going too far.
