Review of The Devil Wears Prada (2006) by John M — 10 Aug 2012
The cutthroat world of pretty dresses. Anne Hathaway plays Andy, the wide-eyed avatar for the audience. She gets a job at the prestigious fashion magazine, Runway, working directly under Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep).
She comes to learn that Runway is Miranda's world, and everybody else just lives there. Is this more geared towards the fairer sex? Well, undoubtedly, as fashion and cute outfits are ultimately the crux on which this movie rests upon, but that doesn't mean that there isn't something here to be enjoyed by everyone: namely, the performances.
For one thing, there has yet to be a movie that I don't like Stanley Tucci in; even if the movie itself is lackluster, he always brings something memorable to the table, and here is no different. Then there is Meryl Streep, who is what you walk away remembering.
She does a scary good job of playing the tyrannical queen bitch, subtly adding lots of depth to a character that is emotionally stilted. I did have a few problems with it; it ran long for me and it gets a little repetitive with the amount of hoops they make Andy jump through; seriously, she runs around everywhere like Tom Cruise does in a Mission Impossible movie.
Was this movie made for me? Not really, but it is certainly worth watching.
