Review of The Devil Inside (2012) by Jake P — 27 Jul 2012
Exorcism movies have been around for awhile now, and for the most part they've been pretty good, even the more recent ones. However. with the new crazy genre sweeping the nation, handheld mocumentary horror movies are making a bigger impact on our society. With these two genres combined we received an intense film by Eli Roth last year: "The Last Excorism", which was truly creepy. They decided to push their luck with the Devil Inside which follows those same exact genres. Unfortunately, this fails in comparison and just doesn't deliver the goods that this genre has done in the past.
First off, in order to make a good horror movie...well...it has to be scary, and well, this one...isn't! Every "horrific" moment we have seen in the trailer, and there's nothing else to keep the film moving. They tried so hard to make this movie 80 minutes, but it seemed to last forever. Another thing that makes this film terrible is how it relies on jump scares. The part that's sad about even that, is that jump scares usually don't work very well in these documentary movies. It's more about getting under your skin and leaving the theater terrified. Needless to say I lost no sleep.
And I'm sure you've all heard that the ending is terrible, and I am going to tell you no different. The directors either had no idea how to end it and just decided: "Ehh this is a good spot I guess", or they tried to make an ending where the audience holds their breaths hoping for more. However, the audience in this movie, knew it was the ending and yelled insults at it.
Overall, the film is neither scary or well developed. This is why most people want this genre to end, because of movies like this. Maybe they shouldn't have taken lessons at the Italian Exorcism College, and maybe learned a little something from Eli Roth.
