Review of The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2006) by Christopher B — 20 Oct 2008
Yip! Near the top of my wishlist for quite some time. A heartbreaking documentary. There's a real spiritual confusion about Daniel Johnston that fascinates people. When he sings with his skull open to the world, it's haunting, and at times, genius when spectating from an art critic's perspective.
His spiritual delusions are creatively captivating, his art gorgeously distinctive, but his battle against what he believes to be demonic powers are confusing and clearly unbliblical. The question is, is this how the world sees Christians? Crazy delusionists? Reminds me of a Brand New album 'The Devil and God are Raging Inside of Me' or something like that.
Absolutely thought-provoking, well chronologued documentary filmmaking. So do you really want to be famous?
