Review of The Descent (2005) by Gabriel H — 31 Jul 2012
I watched this shortly after it was released and didn't think too much of it, in fact I scored it 2 out of 5 on Flixster. I figured I'd re-watch it again in light of the continued critical backing that it has received.
I did enjoy it more this time, it has some interesting ideas and some less interesting ideas. I still have same problems with it though. There is way too much in-fighting and I really don't find the claustrophia scary, at times it seems as though this alone is intended as the tool with which to generate fear.
Then finally when the (EEEK ***SPOILER***) creatures appear it takes a step towards the farcical although there is an interestingly ominous ending. So really its a mixed bag, certainly not without inspiration but at the same time it isn't sustained enough to make this an essential thriller.
