Review of The Descendants (2011) by Sheila L — 10 Sep 2012
Alexander Payne is brilliant when it comes to tonal shift and characterization. His films are witty, intelligent and laugh out loud funny. 2011's "The Descendents" follows in that form and gives us one of George Clooney's best performances on film.
The film sags a bit in the middle as it tries to maintain momentum amidst scenes of slow burning internal struggle. I wonder if the addition of new writers and the absence of Payne's long-time writing partner, Jim Taylor (he did co-produce the film) had something to do with this.
Never-the-less it is an excellent and as always unique film from Payne.
