Review of The Descendants (2011) by Graham S — 20 Nov 2012
Tender and sensitive, but not without baring some fangs, this portrayal of a thoughtful man making his way through many types of 'letting go' was thoroughly enjoyable. Centering around the death of his wife and its effect on immediate family and friends, the story weaves through layer after layer of familiar dysfunction.
Trying to 'do the right thing' in life is rarely simple, and Clooney manages to convince and we manage to sympathize with his plight on many levels. The vast complexities of grief are no surprise to those of us who can relate.
The film does a great job of letting those of us who are yet unfamiliar peer into the emotional maze, and get perhaps a little insight. In pleasing ways, it is both subtle and overt in its handling of this stage of life we all must face alone, and together.
