Review of The Descendants (2011) by Richard D — 25 Dec 2014
I like Alexander Payne ... with the possible exception of "About Schmidt". He's a marvellously humanistic director and his films appeal to something very basic in me. I loved this film in the theatre, I like it just a wee bit less on second viewing.
I don't think the land sale plotline ends up amounting to anything more than a distraction. It's treated as a momentous decision for Clooney and a development for his character, but no drama is really built up about the choice, so it feels inconsequential.
Still, that's a nitpick since the film is about other things.
