Review of The Descendants (2011) by Paul W — 25 Apr 2013
While "The Descendants" could have easily been a movie that was content to safely occupy 3-hanky tear jerker territory, it aspires to be much more and succeeds. Over the course of the movie we see genuine, three dimensional people grappling with one of life's most difficult scenarios.
The movie doesn't manipulate your emotions. It draws you in, and holds your attention. You commit to these characters and their plight of your own accord. You feel with them, not for them, and that makes all the difference in a film of this type.
