Review of The Descendants (2011) by Kevin R — 13 Jan 2013
Everyone who loves her deserves a chance to say good-bye.
Matt King is a boring businessman and his wife is an adrenaline junky that races boats. They live in Hawaii with two amazing little girls but their marriage has grown apart; and while Matt is on a business trip, his wife is in a boating accident and left in a comma. Matt takes time away from his professional life to rebuild his relationship with his daughters and help them deal with the loss of their mother.
"In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stunt men.".
Alexander Payne, director of About Schmidt, Sideways, Citizen Ruth, The Passion of Martin, and the upcoming Nebraska, delivers The Descendants. The storyline for this picture is very good and worth following as it unfolds. It is a bit predictable but has entertaining characters and subplots that unfold nicely. The acting is very good and the cast includes George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Beau Bridges, Robert Forster, Mathew Lillard, and Judy Greer.
"Paradise can go fuck itself.".
The Descendants was a movie that fascinated me based on the plot between father and daughters as well as BrunetteHepburnGirl informing me it moved her like few other pictures in 2011. I did think it was very good but a little more straightforward and predictable than I anticipated. I do recommend seeing this film but I wouldn't add it to your DVD collection as you'll likely only watch it once.
Grade: B.
