Review of The Departed (2006) by Trevor R — 17 Mar 2013
This is Scorcese at his most confident. Dicaprio, Nicholson, Damon, and Wahlberg give career-best performances. The soundtrack is pitch perfect (Will I ever tire of hearing "Gimme Shelter" in a Scorcese flick? I answer thee nay).
Ultimately, the real genius lies in impeccable editing and increasingly rising stakes that build to a perfect climax. This is one of the most purely entertaining, visceral experiences of cinema of the last 10 years, and one of increasing relevance in the modern age.
The final 20 minutes is jaw-dropping. This is the work of a master at the top of his game.
