Review of The Den (2013) by James L — 29 Mar 2014
What inflated and inaccurate reviews from unreliable sources on RT. Even suspending disbelief cannot make this a halway decent film. The premise is preposterous. Chatroulette of Death? What works in this film is ruined by everything that doesn't.
The shared-desktop-found-footage camera work is interesting in the beginning, but quickly gets old. And when the director opts to switch out of the technique, it gets even worse. Implausibility is an understatement.
When it all starts to make sense in the last ten minutes, it feels like a cheap trick that leaves the audience cheated. It's comparable to an unfunny version of the 'Webcam Girl" Workaholics episode.
And you're better off watching that. Because everyone that video chats has high-def, gets unlimited battery life and keeps their laptops/cellphones/helmet cams on. Seems legit. On a positive note, it is pretty meta to watch this film on a Macbook.
That is the only joy. Trollish by nature, unrewarding by execution. A short and unsweet time waster. I recommend you pass. You're welcome.
