Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Nick G — 02 Apr 2010
A very powerful, subtle, and poignant film. De Niro, Streep, Walken, Savage, etc. all gave powerful performances. I was particularly impressed with Walken, De Niro, and Savage...
'The Deer Hunter' is a romantic film, a drama film, a war film. The first part introduces us to the happy times: party, wedding, hunting, romance, friendship, laughter. But behind all of these, nothing will ever be the same again. The second part drains out all of it into a horror. We see the three friends morally, spiritually, and psychologically fall apart. One disturbing scene was inside a prison camp where the three friends were forced to play the Russian roulette. It leaves behind a permanent scar to all the characters in the film.
This film might be a bit too long, but it all captured the beautiful mountainous scenery, happy times, and heartaches.
