Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by C B — 08 Feb 2011
The Deer Hunter is one the most tense, emotional disturbing films of all time. The film follows the lives of three steel-workers who have enlisted in the US Army to be sent to fight in Vietnam. The film has three sections.
First, it starts with a wedding and a hunting trip, right before the three men are sent off. Though, the section is so beautifully done and seems so natural, making the viewer forget they are watching a film, not a scene from a real wedding.
The second section is Vietnam, disturbing, graphic and utterly intense. The final section shows the men, mainly Michael (De Niro), after they've arrived back from the war of hell. The film is so beautifully done and emotionally intense, it is utterly astonishing.
It is was one of the best films to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, because it is BIG! Second best after "Patton" to win the Academy Award for Best Picture from the 1970's. Great, great film.
