Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Amber S — 30 Apr 2011
This movie is heartbreaking. It's a war movie - and that isn't what causes the sadness. Instead, personal issues, of all things in a war movie, makes this one wild ride of depression. The three hour film opens with a group of friends deer hunting.
This ten minute scene then enters into a forty-five minute wedding scene, where dancing and celebration takes place. Sure this makes the film slow but, it is necessary for it shows us the good times, and then we are suddenly thrust into war.
The men enlist in the military, and fight in Vietnam. The Deer Hunter follows these men and their struggles in the country they are stuck in fighting for. They quickly become prisoners of war and are forced to play Russian Roulette for the amusement of the Viet Cong.
This film is intense as well, I must add.
