Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Casey B — 17 Aug 2012
A surprisingly engimatic Vietnam drama, with much more focus on its characters than the conflict itself. This sets the film apart from other heavy hitters in the genre such as Platoon and Apocalypse Now and instead allows it to shine on it's own.
It's war scenes are easily amongst the most harrowing ever put to celluloud, with each of the leads putting in superb and convincing performances. As mentioned previously though, it's the development of the characters over time, rather than the hell they go through that defines this film and as a character study, it's near perfect.
