Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Edgar C — 23 Dec 2012
Winner of 5 Oscars (including Best Picture & Best Director (Michael Cimino)), "The Deer Hunter" is a dramatic & controversial film about 3 ordinary Americans whose lives change after fighting in the Vietnam War.
The film lasts 3 hours (which is painstakingly long), but those 3 hours set the pace of the film in particular order: the 1st hour is carefree & innocent, the 2nd hour is intense & harrowing to the 3 main characters (in particular the brutal, infamous Russian roulette scene), & the 3rd hour is dramatically touching & heartbreaking.
Great acting, amazing scenery, unnerving settings, & outstanding plotline makes "The Deer Hunter" both one of the best war/Vietnam films ever made & one of the best films of the 1970s!
