Review of The Deer Hunter (1978) by Guido S — 15 Oct 2013
De Niro, John Cazale, John Savage, and Walken are blue collar buddies when their lives are about to change. Savage is about to get married, and most of the rest of them are going to Vietnam. They get captured and forced to play Russian Roulette with one another. They eventually break and De Niro, Walken and Savage escape. De Niro comes out with the least amount of emotional damage, Walken struggles psychologically, and Savage has to have both legs amputated.
I finally got around to seeing this one, and it has a really long first act of a wedding. I get that it is supposed to make you connect with the characters so you feel for them more once the real story begins, but it could have been cut down dramatically. The cinematography is excellent. It's a good story, but I feel time has not been kind to this one. Probably could have cut down the run time considerably and told nearly the same story.
