"The Deer Hunter" is a long, depressing and ultimately very thought provoking film about the pain of war. The nightmares didn't end for so many men, even after they had returned home from Vietnam. This picture explores life before, during and after a torturous tour in Vietnam for a group of soldiers. The main focus is on DeNiro and Walken's characters. The rest of the cast does a fine job and Meryl Streep plays an endearing love interest.

The first act of this film is a bit monotonous, focusing on the small town life and the marraige of one of the groups friends. The most exhilerating part of the film is the second act that takes place in wartime Vietnam. The rest of the film focuses on the damaging effects the war has on the soldiers minds, bodies and souls. The Russian roulette scenes are intense and startling.

"The Deer Hunter" is a reminder of the many tragedies of war and is worth seeing.
