Review of The Deep End of the Ocean (1999) by The Critic ( — 26 Sep 2012
Ulu Grosbard directs this emotional battlefield about a family attempting to regain its identity with commendable restraint.
Based on the novel by Jacquelyn Mitchard, whose delicious dialogue is utilised here, the film is above all an exercise in superior acting; Michelle Pfeiffer and Treat Williams are excellent, with solid contributions from newcomers Jonathan Jackson and Ryan Merriman as their children.
Perhaps not the knock-out punch that fans of the original text would expect, but 'The Deep End of the Ocean' is a fine piece in its own right.
