Review of The Deep Blue Sea (2011) by Ale M — 07 Apr 2012
Terence Davies is a national treasure, so deal with it. And Weisz despite being on the A list, is increasingly an underrated gem. She is superb in this.
This is gloomy 1950s London. Tobacco-stained, depressing and wonderfully repressed. Where do you start. With Bealeâ(TM)s wounded bafflement. And Hiddlestonâ(TM)s mix of petulance and tenderness [better than he was in Thor!] But both men bring out the different sides of Weisz, who seems to get more beautiful just as her acting goes from strength to strength. Weisz makes Hester a willing accomplice in her own perdition, a woman determined to feel alive, fully knowing what her passionate independence might mean.
Just quality for every one of its 95 minutes.
