Despite strong lead performances, especially from Weisz as a woman who risks everything for love, the emotional drama in Terence Davies' adaptation of the '50s-era stage play often feels overwrought, which is exaggerated at times by an overbearing soundtrack, and the overriding impression is one of artificiality.
