Review of The Deep Blue Sea (1994) by Jc E — 13 Sep 2012
It's easy to see that this film was based on a stage play. It's very theatrical in how it plays out, and the players have a very natural presence. Even how it's filmed gives it a sense that it's a little out of the ordinary.
That said, it's a little aloof in places, and despite the beautiful music by Samuel Barber, it seems a little too artsy and drags at bit. Still, Rachel Weisz (The Bourne Legacy) and Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) both turn in solid performances, and it plays out like many a stage play would - though with richer sets and an easier transition effect for flashbacks.
One complaint, however would be that the R-rating is based solely on one scene, and could have easily been more restrained to land a less harsh PG-13 rating. (And let's face it: I didn't need to see so much of Loki.
) It's a solid movie, but not really memorable. Good performances, beautiful music, but no real effect.
