Review of The Deep Blue Sea (1994) by Kimberly B — 14 Dec 2012
Rachel Weisz turned in an impressive performance here, but she didn't have much to work with. The plot and dialogue were skimpy. Still, none of this would have held together if it weren't for her, so she deserves a lot of credit.
The story is slow-moving and very depressing. I got caught up in the tragedy, but that's mostly because I am highly susceptible to it. The characters were all pretty undeveloped, however, so it was difficult to get a grasp on why any of them behaved the way they did.
And Freddie was so extremely unlikable and unLOVABLE, I have no idea whatsoever why Hester loved him. It's one thing to choose passion of a stable but dull marriage, but why in the world would she choose to be mistreated and neglected? how is that "love?" She clearly had serious psychological problems and watching the unfolding of all this unhappiness was frustrating.
The movie also had a somewhat choppy, "unfinished" aspect, like it got slapped together without quite enough thought. I have mixed feelings on this. Two thumbs sideways.
