Review of The Deep Blue Sea (1994) by Andrew R — 07 Feb 2013
Rachel Weisz carries it and contributes to some beautiful, moving moments.
However the director/screenwriter Terence Davies shows his lack of experience with dramatic features a few too many times. Notably, the 'shouty' scenes involving Weisz's lover are too stagy even for the stage. And the landlady's speech about true love after we've seen her tenderly nursing her husband is utterly superfluous--as Samuel Goldwyn famously said, if I wanted to send a message, I'd use Western Union. The use of the music, too, is often misjudged and unnecessary.
All that said, the film contains some almost heartbreaking scenes of the mess we can make of our lives. Worth seeing.
