Review of The Deep Blue Sea (1994) by Steve W — 28 Feb 2013
Terence Davis adaptation of the 1952 play is a wonder. The movie is simple yet the subtle nuances and performances are brilliant. The three principle actors Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston, and Simon Russell Beale, and they pretty much carry the movie.
The film works with a "less is more" approach, simple glance and awkward silences showcase that there's much more beneath the surface. Small talk hides subtext and the dialogue is excellent.
It does have a bit of a rocky start and the musical score is a bit intrusive, but The Deep Blue Sea is a very well done drama about love and how the differ from one person to another.
