Review of The Debut (2000) by Alex G — 12 May 2014
The Rebuke. This film is a diluted drama. Sorry to say, but this film easily separates and alienates its audience. If you're not an immigrant or a child of 2nd generation immigrants, then this film's themes and meaning are less tangible and compelling.
The film does imbue the Filipino-American struggles rather vividly yet fails to accommodate a universal message. It's as though this film is purposefully devised to reach a target audience. As a Filipino, I was impressed with the earnest realism because I can easily relate (I get constant comparison to looking like Rufio).
Speaking of Basco, he's the only one you'll get real acting from. Overall, alright film yet comes with a prerequisite.
