Review of The Debt (2010) by Kevin P — 10 May 2012
Weighty, intense and morally grey, The Debt is a stylishly shot, perfectly paced thriller which undoubtedly benefits from wonderfully understated performances all round. Even the inclusion of Sam Worthington couldn't cheapen the deal, and he performed admirably in a role far removed from his usual Jarhead persona (despite retaining the haircut and the line âWelcome to THE MISSION); though the stars were undoubtedly Chastin and Mirren.
Throughout it is these performances that give the film its intense credibility and allow the story its deserved weight and depth; avoiding clich whilst retaining power and emotiveness. Despite the difficult subject matter, The Debt remains non-judgmental and discursive, yet is never less than compelling.
