Review of The Debt (2010) by Jason C — 18 Nov 2012
What I loved about 'The Debt' was also what I hated about it. The shifting between past and present was great - I thought by the end it captured an emotional punch, especially after a cheesy segway into flashback at the beginning - but what wasn't lucid enough was being able to decipher the characters, and who was who, from the past.
The directing was quite modest (great playing with temporal order and frequency) but I thought Mirren probably offered one of her weaker performances. I just didn't believe her; and her accent faltered a little.
Not a terrible film, but in the hands of a greater script writer and a director willing to take the film in a slightly different direction, I think it could be have been great.
