Review of The Debt (2010) by Phil T — 14 Dec 2012
An atmospheric thriller with a brooding and melancholic edge that I found quite effective. The cast - Mirren, Chastain, Wilkinson, Csokas, Hinds, and (the uber-creepy) Christensen - is aces, but I'd like to single out Sam Worthington, who delivers what is, in my estimation, his first (and, so far, only) certifiably great performance, and while the Mirren/Chastain character is clearly the focus, the Hinds/Worthington character is the emotional heart of the story.
The script is also quite good, employing an interesting narrative structure that shouldn't work as well as it does. Thomas Newman's tense score warrants a mention, too, as it's rather unlike most of his usual output.
Really solid work all around.
