Review of The Deaths of Ian Stone (2008) by J D — 25 Apr 2008
This is my second foray into the "After Dark" series, and so far, while I haven't been knocked out or blown away or scared to death, I have been entertained. A couple years ago I signed up for the now-defunct "William Shatner Science Fiction DVD Club" where I'd get a movie every month PERSONALLY chosen by the Shat himself (or so they told me).
This series kind of reminds me of that. The movies aren't the best in the world, but they show imagination and promise. This one definitely has some cool ideas going for it, but like the other movie I've watched from this series, "Unearthed", it's weakened by underwhelming performances by the leads.
Mike Vogel is passable as the tortured Ian Stone, but he's fairly bland. This one was produced by Stan Winston, though, so the creature effects are top-notch. Like "Unearthed", it's a little silly and not very scary but it's still a pretty entertaining flick.
I could actually see this one as being a pretty decent Sci-Fi Channel series; the character of Ian Stone and the premise behind him would be a cool one to continue to explore.
