Review of The Death of Stalin (2017) by Eoin H — 20 Sep 2018
Very enjoyable and lighthearted take on the events of the few days after Joseph Stalin died. Firstly the movie is funny which is to be expected as it is written by Armando Iannuici writer of The Thick of It and Alan Partridge. The hunour is dry and the dialogue is witty. Stalins incompentent and drinken son and his indecisive deputy provide some laugh out loud moments. The slapstick jokes in some of the scenes reminded me of Monty Python.
There are plenty of good performances in the movie and I particularly enjoyed Steve Buschemi who adds a real star quality to the movie. It is also well set and the grandiose backgrounds are buildings are nice to watch.
The movie takes a pivtol historical event and casts it in a funny light. I can imagine the chaos of the time when Stalin's scheming lieutenants are scraping around in the power vacum he left behind and trying to grab power. The massive indecision faced by those who have never had the freedom to make decisions is played out to comic effect.
Very enjoyable movie which I might even watch again.
