Review of The Death of Stalin (2017) by Adrian N — 30 Mar 2018
The Death of Stalin is one of the best big-screen satires I've seen in years. The all-star cast included many actors from English theatre. They brought the best of the stage with them, from excellent body language to perfect comedic timing.
The film had everything that is required to make a dark, uncomfortable, complex and historical drama something worth laughing and thinking about. The film also did a great job of communicating to outsiders what is known about the last days of Stalin's rule and has a great time exploring the possible dramas that might have ensued in the wake of his death.
Buscemi, Peale and Tambor stand out as excellent players, although they are well supported by a strong cast and robust writing. The Death of Stalin is one of my new favourite movies. While the genre may be too dark for the mainstream, this picture is certainly an instant cult classic.
