Review of The Death of Stalin (2017) by Dj I — 11 Apr 2018
This is a good film and I was definitely entertained. I laughed quite a bit too at the Jr high/British/Benny Hill humor that was interjected throughout. It is laughter, however, that can make you feel soiled & conflicted if you are educated in the historical context of the.
Times & the Soviet Union's brutal history under Stalin. Its just hard, subjectively, to set that aside in recollection of this film. Losing your job has room for comedic interpretation and exploitation. But those people didnt just lose their jobs, they were executed too. They could make a riveting, serious film on this topic that would rival "Schindler's List" or "13 Days" in morality, human degradation, and drama. Its not that the movie doesnt work or isnt good, I recommend it. You just might have a tough time swallowing comedy in a backdrop of human misery.
