Review of The Dead Zone (1983) by Tom V — 28 Sep 2012
This is one of Cronenberg's more mainstream efforts, but his signature themes are still present, especially the body turned traitor. Johnny Smith's lonely jourenty from unwitting psychic detective to savior of the planet is a study in self sacrifice for a greater good.
Here is a man who will die reviled as a would-be political assassin, and no one (except perhaps Sarah) will understand what he really did. There's a real tragic dimension to this story of lost romance and bittersweet personal redemption.
