Review of The Dead Girl (2006) by Damion R — 19 Aug 2007
In short, this is the film about a young woman who is found dead and a bunch of viginettes on various people connected to her and the affect her death has, including her estranged mother, the man who murdered her and the woman who found her.
The extremely impressive cast, including a slew of names like Brittany Murphy, Toni Collette, Marcia Gay Harden, Rose Byrne, Piper Laurie, James Franco, Mary Steenburgen, Bruce Davidson and Giovanni Ribisi, give some of the best performances I have ever seen them do in the short period of screen time they get, but by the end of the film, I didn't get the point that the filmmaker, Karen Moncrieff, was trying to make.
The DVD came with a little PSA about runaways, but even still, I don't feel the film came together in any congruent way as to leave the audience with an idea of the objective Moncrieff had in wanting to make this film.
Overall, a wonderful little piece of cinema that merely left my wondering what its point was.
