Review of The Dead (1987) by Hindénbörg E — 26 Oct 2007
OK, so I consider John Huston to be one of the 10 most important American filmmakers ever. And by the same accord, I won't even dispute James Joyce's credibility. Huston had a knack for adapting some great pieces of writing into great films (See: Wise Blood, Reflections in a Golden Eye). So I expected his swan song to be just as good...
It's not.
This movie is as difficult to sit through as Joyce's story is to read. But that's where the similarities end. Through its haunting prose, Joyce's story becomes rewarding in the end. Huston's film is just... eh...
It's not a bad movie. But it really seems like too much of a straight-forward retelling of Joyce's story, which is ultimately its downfall.
