Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) by Tony Z — 23 Sep 2010
I can definitely see why people were so disappointed with this movie. It had the capacity to be awesome, and it had the CGI effects that could have made for great cinema. However, the director seemed to be in way over his head.
He seemed to think that Keanu Reeves doing his Neo impression and all of his great alien effects would rake in the good reviews, however he ended up a day late and a dollar short when it came to script.
Kathy Bates was perhaps one of the weakest points of this movie, they didn't use her character the right way, nor did they use John Cleese very much at all. I think the real problem with this movie was both in character and story progression.
They built it up to be an enormous destructive movie of epic proportions, but then they made it fall short, big time.
