Watched with my 12yo son. He hasn't seen the original. It was substantially better than I expected, if not ground breaking. I thought it took the key bits of the original plot and then made well with them.
Agree with the comments about the slightly limp ending. I think I'd like to say that the negative reviews sound as if they are older people who loved the original (I am in that category). My 12yo son really really enjoyed this.
