Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) by Uditha D — 10 Dec 2011
Other than Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, and John Cleese's elaborate and good performances in it, The Day the Earth Stood Still to me seemed a very long, pointless, and horrible film. Although I hadn't watch the original when I saw this, I inadvertently thought this to be a most inferior version of that 1951 sci-fi classic.
I wasn't disappointed later on. Even in comparison to most modern science-fiction features (most notably Knowing), it still pales. In the end, however, Reeves' cold and insipid (and near perfect) performance as Klaatu was, in a way, great.
But that will never wipe away the fact that, notwithstanding its heavy emphasis on special effects, The Day the Earth Stood Still was still a major disappointment.
