Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) by Aaron G — 28 Jun 2012
Do you guys remember when remakes used to be good? Yeah, me neither. Because 90% of them suck, reason being is that they either redo the original movie to a fault (A Nightmare On Elm Street 2010) or they change way too much, like this movie right here.
The story here is that an alien named Klatus, played by Keanu Reeves, lands in the middle of New York and basically says "Hey humanity, knock of the killing or pollution or else an alliance of aliens are gonna blow you up" basically the same plot as the original(The masterpiece), however it is told horribly here with characters changing personalities every 5 minutes! Horrible acting from everyone in this movie, unlikeable characters (Who do I hate more? The spoiled little brat or the stupid lady who won't shut up?.
But the worse offence, the WORST offence by far is that they add in a stupid doomsday plot twist that wasn't in the original basically to show off crappy effects. It just made me so mad that I turned to the person sitting next to me in the theatere (Who I had never met before) and said "Can you believe this bullshit?" to which he replied "I know right?".
The original The Day The Earth Stood Still was about great characters, good effects for the time, good camera shots, excellent acting, a brilliant plot, and above all else good filmmaking. This remake has none of that.
