Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) by Robert P — 20 Aug 2012
Klaatu arrives; judge, jury and executioner of humanity. But clemency is granted (except for the Eastern seaboard between D.C. and Manhattan) thanks to the love between stepmother and stepson. *sniffle* It's just too beautiful.
GTFOH.
****************************************SPOILER ALERT********************************************************.
If there's one thing I can't stand it's a slow movie. This story could've been told in 40 minutes but that would've meant less BS. No games of mousetrap with GORT. No silly military machinations (firing ballistics at a nanotech locust cloud? Really?) No tea with Professor. No pissing contest with Madame Secretary (he didn't have to be TAKEN to the UN. All he needed was a laptop with Skype. Come on now. Of course, that would've led to way more exposition than this movie seemed willing to give.).
Klaatu will be back in 80 years with another GORT. Mark your Calendars - 2088. Humanity didn't learn anything. Turning off our technology won't keep us from rebuilding it will it? 70% of the population will have died but it will still be back to business as before.
