I have not seen the original, so I don't know how it compares to this remake.
All that can be said is, that this film has a strong pacifist message. Keanu Reeves is cast well, playing an alien with monotone delivery of dialogue, which (hypothetically) is just how one would expect someone unfamiliar with human languages would speak.
