Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) by Just S — 20 Sep 2010
Though a long shot from the original, this remake of the 50's classic is interesting enough to be noted. The filmmakers put forth a strong effort in producing a faithful update, and the result is an overall well-crafted film that keeps your attention to the very end. The special effects are a lot of fun, as is Keanu Reeve's performance, and a few moments are directly from the original movie. So if you're looking for a fresh thrill, this ought to do it.
However, if you're looking for a truly honorable retelling, the film lacks much of the human character and well-delivered message of the original. It feels a little too fast-paced, as if they squeezed a 2.5-hour movie into a 1.5 hour movie, and what little emotional drama there is seems dropped in at the last minute, thus feeling awkward and even a little cheesy. As for the robot, did they HAVE to make it look like a 150-foot boxer? The guy in the plastic suit from the original was more entertaining than that overblown sci-fi gimmick.
Overall, this new "Day the Earth Stood Still" is worth at least one viewing. It's fun, fast, and a thrill for the eyes, even if it does toss a few over-the-top moments at you.
