Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Walker W — 21 Dec 2008
CONSENSUS: Silly by today's standards (and even slightly for its time), this nonetheless conveys a well-meaning, obviously political message. Rennie is fortunately agreeable in the lead, making his alien role peaceful and obliging, but also detached and saddened.
The robot Gort of course is a scene stealer and an absolute blast to watch. A generally well-written plot with a thick layer of foreboding helps make this sci-fi classic still befitting today and sets a substantial standard for its 2008 remake.
MY GRADE: B.
