Review of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) by Tracy — 31 Dec 2008
This is by far the best sci-fi movie I have ever seen. This movie is one big metaphore that is saying that if we do not change, our world will end, atleast thats what I got from it. The performances were great and the special effects are top notch compared to the standards of 1951.
Today we would asy o obviously they dropped those guns, but back then that was like The Matrix's bullet stop. The only minor thing that bugged me was Bobby(played by Billy Gray). He reminded me too much of Beaver from Leave it to Beaver.
He just got really annoying. Michael Rennie was perfect to play Klaatu. He is the only person that could have played him. Another great thing about this movie is the suspense. When the spaceship flies over everyone got quiet and I personnally couldnt wait to see what was going to happen.
Then Gort was the main factor of suspense. He was a metal 8 Ft' robot that did nothing except stand there and terrify everyone. It was the thought that scared everyone in the movie of what he could do, which is destroy the entire planet.
Overall this is a masterpiece in the Sci-Fi genre. Nobody should skip this, it is that good.
